Heat pumps work like two-way central air-conditioners, replacing both the heating and cooling systems in your house. In the winter, they extract heat from the outside and moves it inside your home. In the summer, the process is reversed: The heat pump takes heat from inside your home and moves it outside.  Heat pumps use as little as 1/3 of the energy of traditional HVAC, and run purely on electricity.  Since they don't burn gas or oil, they don't emit harmful particles and gases into your home or the atmosphere. One particular type of air source heat pump - the mini-split system - does not require ductwork and can be installed more flexibly to heat and cool individual rooms.

A geothermal system also replaces both your home's existing air conditioning and heating equipment.  Unlike air source systems, geothermal pairs a heat pump with safe, underground pipes that move heat between the earth and your home.  Because the temperature underground is constant (approximately 55 degrees), the energy required to heat water running through the pipes in the winter - or cool it in the summer - is minimal, making geothermal the most efficient way to heat or cool a building.  Its modern controls can also greatly enhance comfort versus a traditional fossil fuel system.
